Director George Stevens's adaptation of Booth Tarkington's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1921 novel stars Katharine Hepburn as Alice, a young, middle-class woman with society aspirations after attending a party hosted by a wealthy local debutante. Alice meets Arthur Russell (Fred MacMurray), a nice young man from an affluent family. But can Alice keep up appearances and convince Arthur that she, too, comes from a good family?
