In a culture where educating a girl is widely considered a waste of time, young Sofia must contend with a corrupt bureaucracy, a lecherous professor and much more in her quest to become a doctor. But as AIDS wreaks havoc on the community, Sofia may have to compromise her principles to achieve her goal. Director João Luis Sol de Carvalho's atmospheric drama paints a detailed portrait of women's struggle for education in contemporary Mozambique.
