Artists of the 20th Century: Marc Chagall

2004 Rated NR 50m

Russian-born French painter Marc Chagall (1887-1985), famed for his fanciful, dreamlike paintings that are often steeped in Hasidic culture, refused to be categorized as a Surrealist. Color was what really governed the artist's compositions, along with the tug of memory (mostly of his small-town upbringing in Vitebsk). Part of the "Artists of the 20th Century" series that examines the life and work of major artists of the century.
