In 19th-century Seville, tempestuous gypsy Carmen (Julia Migenes-Johnson) seduces army corporal Don José (Placido Domingo). The corporal forsakes his military career, his fiancée and even his ailing mother to win the beauty's heart -- but she shuns his advances in favor of a bullfighter (Ruggero Raimondi).
