Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that Clannad is a funny but dramatic teen anime series with serious themes including death and moving on after tragedy. There are some intense emotional moments and some truly moving storylines, including the loss of parents, so be prepared for tears. All the teen female characters have exaggerated bodies -- thin with large breasts and short skirts -- and all are attracted to the main male character, Tomoya.

Sexual Content

The girls in Clannad are all drawn with impossible body proportions (e.g. thin bodies, large breasts, long legs) and are usually wearing extremely short skirts with their uniforms. There is some sexual innuendo, for example, in one episode Tomoya and Kyou are stuck in a storage shed and Kyou implies that sex is a possibility. However, nothing sexual actually happens.

Violence

Some comic fantasy violence typically surrounding Tomoyo Sakagami who has a reputation as a tough girl and fierce fighter. Sunohara is constantly picking fights with her, only to get kicked and beaten. Their fights are typically comic relief with a video game-like points counter being shown each time Tomoyo kicks Sunohara.

Language

Occasional words such as "ass", "damn," and "hell." Characters often tease each other.

Social Behavior

An overarching message is that, despite tragedies and setbacks, life is still worth living and that it is possible to have a happy future despite a sad past. Also, tragedy should not be used as an excuse to stop living or require special treatment.

Consumerism

Not applicable

Drugs / Tobacco / Alcohol

Some secondary adult characters drink and smoke. Tomoya's father is shown passed out and drunk with bottles all around. Nagisa's dad smokes and is often seen with a cigarette in his mouth.
