Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that Defiance is a sci-fi series that is designed to connect with a violent third-person-shooter video game. The series isn't quite as intense as the game, but both include the use of guns and advanced sci-fi type weapons. In the show we see both human and alien deaths, with blood but little gore. There are scary, menacing aliens, animals, and mutant monsters and characters are frequently in jeopardy. Viewers will also see environmental catastrophes and inter-species racism and romance, and hear some moderate cursing. That said, the series is intelligently written and thought-provoking for teens who can handle it.

Sexual Content

Occasional sexually charged scenes with implied intercourse, sexy clothes, bare backs/legs. There is romance between various alien and human species, plus flirtation and kissing.

Violence

Characters brandish and shoot gigantic guns and fancy space-y laser weapons. We see both alien and human beings killed, plus stabbings and bloody wounds. There are scary aliens and mutant animals and environmental catastrophes. Main characters fight in hand-to-hand combat and get injured. The atmosphere is tense and scary.

Language

A few curses include "hell" and "bitch."

Social Behavior

The show illustrates many complicated ethical questions: What makes a race of beings powerful and successful? How does war negatively affect all who fight in them? Why is it the nature of humankind to receive new things with suspicion?

Consumerism

The series has been built in conjunction with a video game, both of which are heavily marketed.

Drugs / Tobacco / Alcohol

Some scenes take place in a bar, with characters drinking glasses of various colored liquids.
