This second installment of Dorothy L. Sayers's famous Harriet Vane mysteries sees Harriet (Harriet Walter) cleared of murder and seeking solace in the country. While walking along a barren beach, Harriet stumbles across the body of a bearded young man with his throat cut. She is puzzled by a mystery that could very well have been suicide, murder or a political plot.

Detective novelist Harriet Vane has lived down the notoriety of being accused of murdering her lover. She accepts an invitation to revisit her alma mater, a ladies' college in Oxford. Shortly after her arrival, someone starts playing distasteful pranks around the college, so the Warden asks Harriet to investigate. Wimsey, Harriet's would-be suitor, joins the investigation when the practical jokes become more dangerous.
