Common Sense Note

Parents need to know that Flicka: Country Pride is the third family-friendly installment in the literary horse's film franchise. Like the previous movie, this is a direct-to-DVD release that centers around yet another teenage girl who bonds with the beautiful mustang. This is a wholesome movie that's a great pick for horse-loving kids and tweens; just be ready for a tiny bit of romance (two chaste kisses) and some mean-girl behavior that's sweetly resolved by the end of the movie. There are also several references to a deceased father and husband who died in a tragic accident, but the theme of loss is pivotal to the story, which teaches kids the importance of friendship and support during tough times.

Sexual Content

Two brief kisses -- one between adults the other between teens; also mild flirting, one slow dance, and the promise of a date.

Violence

There's no violence, but younger kids might be upset hearing about Kelly's father's death. In one scene, a horse is injured and can't continue to compete. Some pushing and arguing.

Language

Some snobby put-downs.

Social Behavior

Wonderful messages about family and friendship. Lindy and Kelly both show how grief can change a person and how you can learn to heal through support, faith, and friendship. The bond between humans and animals is depicted as a transformational force in Kelly's life. Kelly's ability to bring together a team of misfits who all love horses shows that you can't judge a person based on appearances. Even the fractured relationship between Kelly and Stephanie is a reminder not to push friends away when you're going through tough times. Jealousy is exposed as a destructive trait, especially in a friendship.
