A conservative, middle-class household is torn apart by seething emotion in this intensely personal opera by Leos Janacek. Nancy Gustafson sings the title character, a housewife whose love affair and domineering mother-in-law (Felicity Palmer) drive her to suicide. The stylized, Edvard Munch-inspired set design and a moving performance by Ryland Davies as Kat'a's ineffectual husband distinguish this production from the 1988 Glyndenbourne Festival.
