Set at a turning point in Russian history, this politically charged opera -- arguably Modest Mussorgsky's greatest work -- was incomplete at the time of the composer's death. This production performed by the Vienna State Opera (featuring Bulgarian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov in the role of Prince Ivan Khovansky and Paata Burchuladze as Dositheus) offers a little closure, with the addition of a final chorus composed by Igor Stravinsky in 1913.
