Director Ali Reza Amini fashions an inspired examination of military might and how it transforms the young men of Iran. Trained under the harshest conditions in the mountains near Tehran, naifs are made over into brutal soldiers. But when one recruit begins to play a tape recording of a woman's voice, the soldiers are reminded of the beauty of life -- a hopeful message that spreads and eventually changes the men's world view.
