Charles Farrell stars as Tim, a young man who has just met and taken a fancy to poor farm girl Mary (Janet Gaynor) when World War I suddenly breaks out, causing him to postpone his planned courtship and enlist in the army. During his tour of duty, Tim becomes wounded and returns home confined to a wheelchair, prompting him to suppress his true feelings for Mary -- a decision that results in heartbreaking circumstances for all concerned.
