Legendary filmmaker Robert Bresson directs this haunting adaptation of Georges Bernanos's novel about the bleak, hopeless life of a teenage girl, Mouchette (Nadine Nortier), who seeks to escape her alcoholic father and terminally ill mother. But after leaving her grim surroundings, she finds the outside world equally harsh. Cast with mostly nonprofessional actors, Bresson's tragic tale achieves a level of great subtlety and naturalism.
