When high-class call girl Claudia Draper (Barbra Streisand) kills a customer in self-defense, her parents (Karl Malden and Maureen Stapleton) attempt to have her declared mentally incompetent to avoid an embarrassing scandal. Claudia has difficulty pulling it together to prove herself sane, however: She constantly disrupts the courtroom, and she trusts no one -- not even her hard-nosed court-appointed attorney (Richard Dreyfuss).
