Julien Duvivier directs this lyrical tale -- adapted from stories by French author Jules Renard -- about a young redheaded boy (Fabien Haziza) who struggles to be accepted by his bitter mother and his emotionally absent stepfather. Driven to the brink of suicide by the cruelties of his mother and siblings, the child eventually forms a potent bond with his stepfather.
