Three novellas by Juan Rulfo serve as the basis of this sensuous drama depicting the modernization of Mexico. Elderly Don Julio (Pedro Armendáriz Jr.) -- who connects the three tales -- languishes in his crumbling hacienda and reminisces about his past. During the 1950s, Bonfilio reconciles with his estranged family, gravedigger Demetrio juggles love and death, and Don Julio mourns his wasted relationship with his wife.
