Riders to the Sea
Ralph Vaughan Williams adapted this emotionally charged operetta from J.M. Synge's one-act play about the difficult lives of rural fishermen on the rugged west coast of Ireland during the turn of the 20th century. Though the characters within the tale lead a seemingly simple existence, their lives are fraught with peril each day as they must contend with the elements -- a tension that is reflected in the intensity of the opera's score.
