Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny
The Salzburg Festival's 1998 presentation of Kurt Weill's opera, with a libretto by Bertolt Brecht, features soprano Catherine Malfitano as Jenny, the warmhearted prostitute, and tenor Jerry Hadley as Jimmy, the story's hero. Led by conductor Dennis Russell Davies, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra performs this early 20th century political satire, which skewers the burgeoning consumer culture of the day.
