Romantics & Realists: Whistler

2000 Rated NR 50m

Considered a key proponent of the Abstract movement, American-born yet British-based artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler stressed the importance of composition over accurate portrayal of the subject matter. Widely known for his painting titled Arrangement in Grey and Black (nicknamed "Whistler's Mother"), Whistler became engaged in a financially disastrous lawsuit with critic John Rushkin, which eventually bankrupted him.
