Set in 1916 amid political unrest on Ireland's Dingle Peninsula, this epic tale stars Sarah Miles as Rosy Ryan, a naïve young girl trapped in a loveless marriage to schoolmaster Charles Shaughnessy (Robert Mitchum). When a handsome British officer arrives in town, his tryst with Rosy sets tongues wagging and leads the locals to suspect Rosy of being an informant after a rebel operation is sabotaged.
