This 1986 documentary draws much of its performance material from two live concerts: one in a New York quarry, the other in a Tokyo orchestra hall. Director Robert Mugge also provides historical perspective on Rollins' work, which included collaboration with fellow music pioneers Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
