Mary Pickford displays her versatility in this Victorian melodrama, playing the handsome but paralyzed title character and homely orphan Unity Blake. Stella's well-meaning, patrician parents shield her from the world's harsh realities, while the unloved Unity suffers severe abuse at the hands of her alcoholic employer, Louise. Stella and Unity cross paths when both fall for John Risca (Conway Tearle) -- Louise's long-suffering husband.
