Chinese composer Tan Dun explores the journey of famed Italian explorer Marco Polo in this inventive opera within an opera that fuses Eastern and Western sensibilities with a variety of artistic forms, including Kabuki and Indonesian shadow theater. Mezzo-soprano Sarah Castle sings the title role of Marco, with tenor Charles Workman singing the "memory" role of Polo. Bass Stephen Richardson co-stars as Kublai Khan.
