The Americanization of Emily
Arthur Hiller helmed this trenchantly funny adaptation of Paddy Chayefsky's script about cynical American Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Madison (James Garner), who wants nothing to do with frontline heroics during the D-Day invasion. But Charlie's carefully laid plans go awry when he falls for British war widow Emily Barham (Julie Andrews), and his commanding officer's mental breakdown leads to Charlie getting selected as the first man to storm Omaha Beach.
