Outnumbered by a tribe of gun-toting Kiowa Indians, illiterate trapper Joe Bass (Burt Lancaster) reluctantly agrees to trade his furs for educated slave Joseph Lee (Ossie Davis). Bass and Lee track down the Indians to reclaim the furs, but Jim Howie (Telly Savalas) gets there first, nabs the furs, kidnaps Lee and heads to Mexico. Director Sydney Pollack fills this high-spirited Western comedy with slick camera work and sly social commentary.
