Eleni (Alexandra Aidini) and Alexis (Nikos Poursadinis) struggle to keep their love alive amid uncertain times in this first installment of Theo Angelopoulos's trilogy. When Russia invades Odessa, youngsters Eleni and Alexis develop a deep bond in a refugee camp. They fall in love, but circumstances keep them on the move. World War II nears, and the family is torn apart as sons go off to war, Alexis emigrates to America and Eleni is imprisoned.
