After the Civil War, the Baxter family struggles to eke out an existence. All the children -- except for 11-year-old Jody -- have died, leaving Ma (Jane Wyman) embittered, Jody lonely and Penny (Gregory Peck) working hard. Jody befriends an orphaned fawn, but as the fawn grows, it continually breaks into the small garden that is the family's source of food and money. The choice they face in this award-winning film is potentially tragic.
