Up and Down
Jan Hrebejk directs this darkly comic take on life in post-Soviet-controlled Czechoslovakia. The action centers on a misplaced infant who is ultimately sold to petty thieves Lubos and Eman (Marek Daniel and Pavel Liska), who run a black-market adoption agency. Complex and compelling, the film offers up a snapshot of contemporary Czech society, examining all manner of themes, including family issues, racism and class divides, along the way.
