Three stages of a popular Chinese theatre actress's life are highlighted by performances by three separate women; each one portrays the actress at a different level of her career, including her most notable role as male demon Zhong Kui (Yanling Pei). Set in modern times and presented primarily through flashbacks spanning nearly 30 years, the film tells her life story, including the lengths to which her father went to ensure her success.
