Although familiar to Spanish-speaking audiences from the long-running TV show "Mujer, Casos de la Vida Real" (on which she serves as director and star), Mexican-born Adriana Barraza remained largely unknown to the English-speaking world until her Oscar-nominated turn as an illegal immigrant nanny in 2006's Babel.

Babel represents the second time Barraza has worked with fellow countryman director Alejandro González Iñárritu; their first outing together was in Iñárritu's debut feature Amores Perros, in which she played the mother of one of the main characters.

In addition to her work in front of the camera, Barraza is a respected acting coach, director and drama teacher. Spanish-language films for Barraza include La Paloma de Marsella (1999), La Primera Noche (1998) and La Segunda Noche (1999).
