A familiar face of independent "mumblecore" cinema, Greta Gerwig was born Aug. 4, 1983, in Sacramento, Calif. She attended New York City's Barnard College to become a playwright, but a well-received indie film role in director Joe Swanberg's LOL (2006) changed the trajectory of her career.

Most of the mainstream met Gerwig in 2010 when she nabbed an Independent Spirit Award nomination playing Ben Stiller's love interest in Greenberg. But as an emerging movie actress on the grassroots scene, Gerwig built her résumé portraying complex characters in little-seen gems such as 2007's Hannah Takes the Stairs (which she also co-wrote), Yeast and Baghead (both 2008).

Gerwig reteamed with Swanberg in 2008 to co-write, co-direct and co-star in Nights and Weekends, a romantic comedy about long-distance relationships.
