Steinfeld began acting at the age of 8, appearing in commercials, shorts and minor television roles. She expanded her résumé with parts on "Back to You" (2007) and "Sons of Tucson" (2010) and in the made-for-TV movie Summer Camp (2010).
But landing the coveted role of 14-year-old Mattie Ross in the Coen brothers' remake of True Grit (2010) -- and going toe to toe with seasoned co-stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Barry Pepper -- would literally change the course of Steinfeld's career. Along with a long list of other accolades, her performance earned the young actress her first Oscar nomination and opened the door to even meatier parts.
