Signs of Life

An injured soldier named Stroszek (Peter Brogle) and his wife (Athina Zacharopoulou) work as the caretakers of a military fortress on a Greek island. The soldier eventually goes mad (literally) with boredom and tries to kill his wife and everyone else. Director Werner Herzog's first feature -- shot for the bargain basement price of $20,000 from his own script -- is a slow, deliberate film that inspired Stephen King's The Shining.
