An experienced character actor with a long list of stage and screen credits, Cleveland native James Pickens Jr. was born Oct. 26, 1954. He first distinguished himself in professional theater, performing alongside peers such as Denzel Washington and Samuel L. Jackson before moving west to launch a television and film career.

As part of the ensemble cast of the popular series "Grey's Anatomy," Pickens has earned acclaim playing chief surgeon Dr. Richard Webber. Pickens has also enjoyed successful runs on network shows such as "Roseanne," "NYPD Blue," "The Practice," "The X-Files" and the cable hit "Six Feet Under."

Notable film work for Pickens includes Dead Presidents (1995), Nixon (1995), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998) and Traffic (2000, with Michael Douglas).

Decades after two hung juries cleared white supremacist Byron De La Beckwith (Oscar nominee James Woods) in the 1963 shooting death of civil-rights activist Medgar Evers, assistant district attorney Bobby DeLaughter (Alec Baldwin) reopens the case to bring the man to justice. With support from Evers's widow (Whoopi Goldberg), DeLaughter is determined to take down the murderer. Virginia Madsen co-stars in this drama based on the true 1994 trial.
