A versatile actress of television and film with girl-next-door good looks, Julie Bowen was born Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer in Baltimore on March 3, 1970. She speaks fluent Italian thanks to a degree in Italian Renaissance studies from Brown University, where she appeared in a string of student theater productions.

Bowen landed her first film role in the indie flick Five Spot Jewel (1992) while she was still in college; that same year, she appeared briefly on the soap opera "Loving." She later co-starred as Adam Sandler's all-business girlfriend in Happy Gilmore (1996), playing pretty publicist Virginia Venit.

Although Bowen enjoyed prominent runs on "Ed" (2000-04), "Lost" (2005-07), "Boston Legal" (2005-08) and "Weeds" (2008), she found real staying power as harried wife and mother Claire Dunphy on "Modern Family" (2009-). The role also brought Bowen her first Emmy nod.
