Known for imbuing her film characters with a spiritual quality, Meg Tilly was born in Long Beach, Calif., on Feb. 14, 1960. At age 12, she began training as a dancer, eventually earning a scholarship to a leading New York City ballet school. A severe back injury, however, forced Tilly to find a different profession.

Tilly debuted on screen in 1980's Fame, and after appearances in Tex (1982) and the 1983 potboiler Psycho II, she touched filmgoers with her performance in The Big Chill (1983). Tilly's star-making turn came playing a naive nun in Agnes of God (1985); she received a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nomination for her supporting role.

The talented thespian -- the younger sister of actress Jennifer Tilly -- has also graced the silver screen in Off Beat (1986), Valmont (1989), The Two Jakes (1990), Leaving Normal (1992) and Body Snatchers (1993).

The Big Chill

1983 R

After years apart, a group of idealistic former college buddies (William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, JoBeth Williams, Mary Kay Place, Tom Berenger and Jeff Goldblum) who've followed divergent paths as adults reunite at the funeral of one of their own, reconnecting and reminiscing while a soundtrack of 1960s hits plays in the background. The ensemble performance in this Oscar-nominated dramatic comedy reflected the period's baby boomer angst.
