Born July 23, 1967, in Fairport, N.Y., Philip Seymour Hoffman decided to take up acting when a high school wrestling injury dashed his athletic ambitions. After earning a bachelor's degree in drama from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, he established his credentials on the boards before breaking into movies.

Hoffman's first film role of note came in 1992 with Scent of a Woman, which paved the way for parts in other high-profile films such as Twister (1996). His appearance as a craps player in Hard Eight led to an ongoing association with director Paul Thomas Anderson -- and to Hoffman's breakthrough role in 1997's Boogie Nights.

Though best known for his supporting turns, Hoffman took home the Best Actor Oscar for his flawless portrayal of the title character in Capote (2005). He went on to be nominated as Best Supporting Actor in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Doubt (2008) and The Master (2012). Hoffman died Feb. 2, 2014, at the age of 46.
