Independent filmmaker Ricki Stern grew up in New York and studied filmmaking at Dartmouth College, where she made her first documentary about a teenager competing in the Special Olympics.

She then honed her skills with a variety of production and editing jobs, including a behind-the-scenes stint on "Saturday Night Live" and a five-year run as a producer for HBO.

Stern has collaborated with fellow Dartmouth graduate Annie Sundberg on a series of critically acclaimed projects, including The Trials of Darryl Hunt (2006), a moving portrait of a man wrongly accused of rape and murder that was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and the Sundance Grand Jury Prize; and The Devil Came on Horseback (2007), a sobering account of genocide in Sudan.
