Setting aside her acting aspirations for more serious pursuits, she studied to become a political journalist but returned to the theater at a friend's urging, eventually crossing paths with Iranian actor-playwright Houshang Touzie, who would later become her husband and business partner.
But it was Aghdashloo's compelling performance in House of Sand and Fog (2003) that netted the actress a slew of critical accolades and her first Oscar nomination. She has also appeared on television in "24," "Grey's Anatomy" and the miniseries House of Saddam, for which she garnered her first Emmy win.
