A versatile stage and screen actor who's played everything from a plastic surgeon to a TV field reporter, Ty Burrell was born Aug. 22, 1967. He grew up in Applegate, Ore., and studied theater at Southern Oregon University, earning his master's degree in fine arts from Penn State University.

Burrell made his feature-film debut as a heroic Air Force sergeant in the brutal war drama Black Hawk Down (2001). His television work includes scattered episodes of "Law & Order" (2000-03) and recurring roles on the short-lived sitcoms "Out of Practice" (2005) and "Back to You" (2007). But he's best known for his Emmy-nominated portrayal of "cool" but clueless dad Phil Dunphy on the mockumentary-style comedy "Modern Family" (2009-).

Burrell's theater credits range from "Richard III" to the electrifying "Burn This." He also penned the off-Broadway play "Babble" with his brother, Duncan.
