Proving she's much more than a pretty face, Tyra Banks has parlayed her success as a supermodel into an entertainment empire that encompasses television, film and other business ventures. Born Dec. 4, 1973, in Los Angeles, Banks endured an awkward adolescence before signing with Elite Model Management at age 17 and taking Paris by storm.

Ready to begin the next phase of her career, Banks made her acting debut in 1993 with a recurring role as Will Smith's longtime friend on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." She later appeared in films such as Higher Learning, Love & Basketball and Coyote Ugly.

Banks made a pop culture splash in 2003 as the host, creator and executive producer of the long-running reality series "America's Next Top Model," which spawned international versions in more than 35 countries. More television success followed in 2005 with the launch of her Emmy-winning talk show, "The Tyra Banks Show."
